Hockey is slowly but surely coming back. But first, young players, mostly from the draft, need to show what they can do as they face off against each other. Dallas continued its tradition and once again faced Detroit – at Comerica Center in Frisco.
Right off the opening faceoff, Detroit’s Finnie, wearing number 51, scored on a solo effort. After a quick rush into the offensive zone, he cut in front of the goalie and beat Kraws with a backhand. From the start, it was a very physical game with a lot of hits. The play went back and forth, both teams created plenty of chances, and it was surprising that more goals didn’t fall in the opening 20 minutes. Detroit often created dangerous chances off quick counterattacks, especially thanks to their first line. On their skates, Detroit looked great. Dallas tried to combine more and work the puck into a clear scoring chance – they managed one, but missed the net. They then had a power play, but the youngsters couldn’t come up with anything, so the first period ended 1–0.
In the second period, Detroit struck quickly again. Lombardi put the goalie down and tapped the puck into the empty net. About three minutes after Detroit’s second goal, Dallas went on their second power play but didn’t create much. Then Detroit got their first power play of the game and produced three quality shots worth mentioning.
And here came the third goal. After a turnover, Detroit got into a breakaway situation and scored on a rebound. Less than a minute later, they struck again – off a won faceoff, Shai Buium found the back of the net.
At the start of the third period, Dallas finished off a 4-on-3 power play, but didn’t seriously threaten the goal. Then the tables turned, and Detroit went on the power play, which Nygard capitalized on with a beautiful shot. Just minutes later, another power play came, and Detroit converted again, this time on a possible deflection in front of the net. Right off the faceoff, Dallas finally got on the board – 13 minutes before the end, MacDonell scored on a quick breakaway. Then on a 2-on-1, Dallas struck again. Jaxon Fuder scored their second with a quick shot. After these goals, you could see Dallas got some energy, clearly looking to add more.
The game wound down without further drama, and Detroit secured a 6–2 victory.
Overall, we saw a high-scoring and interesting matchup. Detroit was better both in shooting and in play – simply dominant. The game went back and forth at times, with both Detroit and Dallas creating great chances. Credit also goes to Detroit goalie Rudy Guimond, who delivered a solid performance. The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Comerica Center, and we’ll see if the tables turn.
