This summer, one of the major storylines has been the future of Jason Robertson with the Dallas Stars. He has been the subject of trade rumors all summer and a trade is very possible. Robertson struggled at the beginning of the season before catching fire in the second half of the season, when he started to rack up points, but still falling short of previous seasons, especially considering he exceeded the 100 point mark in 2023. Last season, he “only” collected 80 points in 82 games, still elite, but still also a decline from previous years.
In the Playoffs, Robertson was not himself, although the lingering impacts of his injury sustained in the last game in Nashville was likely to blame. He did, however, make a significant impact in the conference finals against the Edmonton Oilers, and was one of the few Stars who contributed meaningfully against a strong Oilers team, scoring 4 goals. Will this be enough for Dallas to extend his contract at his reported $12 million asking price?
Robertson is and always has been the driving force of Dallas’ offense. He creates prime scoring chances, plays on the first power play unit and his skills are evident through both the eye test and his statistics. Almost every team would want such a player and that is why there is a bidding for him that will only grow if Dallas truly begins shopping him. There was talk of a trade to Calgary, with right-shot defenseman Rasmus Andersson as part of a return, but in the end it died down, and nothing new has developed. The Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Utah Mammoth and many others have also inquired about Robertson, with Dallas’s answer being that they are open to negotiations, but need more time to deliberate trading such a great player.
For now the buzz around Robertson has quieted: no phone calls, no news about Robertson; so it looks like he’ll start the season in Dallas. A lot of people are worried about this becoming a similar situation to what happened with Mikko Rantanen and the Colorado Avalanche. His contract was set to expire, they couldn’t reach an agreement, and the Avs traded him. Will the same happen to Robertson? We don’t think so. We think the Stars will extend his contract before the Winter Olympics in February. We would be shocking for anything else to happen. It would be a shame to bet on another card when this one is working for you.
If an adequate offer came for Robertson, a trade could be discussed, but if nothing new is on the table, Robertson should be a Dallas player. His performances have always been well above average, and even when things weren’t going well in Dallas, he is usually the shining star, showing that he is a player who can one day become a significant face of the NHL. His passing and shooting have always been his strengths and he shows it in big games in a way few other players can! Robertson was a hero for Dallas many times in high leverage, contributing an important goal or a key pass.
Jason Robertson’s name is so closely associated with the Dallas Stars that it would be a shame not to continue his story in Texas.
